I always have a salad when I'm at Michael's. There salad bar is by far the best I've ever seen. There are so many different options for toppings for salads, and you are allowed unlimited toppings with a medium or large salad. The unlimited toppings alone makes the salad worth it, as most other places will charge you per item you have put in a salad. The toppings are also all very fresh and tasty. Michael's is my favorite place to grab food in the North Shore.

This is our family tradition for the day after thanksgiving. It's obviously a lot of other family's traditions. The char dogs are perfect- crisp with lots of crunch. We order it the philly way with grilled onions and mustard. Can't go wrong with fries or onion rings. We would love a michaels in California. Love this place !

Classic meeting place that I always want to go to when back up in the northern suburbs. Char dog and cheese fries always my order.

The "meat" of choice in my home is usually chicken however when I indulge and I happen to be in Highland Park, I make my way over to Michael's. The hot dogs are delicious with a little bit of a "snap" when you bite into them. And the cheese they put on them is not that runny cheese sauce that some places use. I've had a burger from Michael's before as well and have found that the kids sized burger is plenty big enough and they cook it just the way you like it. They give you a gigantic bag of fries which is their version of a "small" order that can easily satisfy two people. The pricing is comparable to most fast-food places however I'd say the quality of the meats they use at Michael's is a cut above what you'd get from a fast-food chain. And, they now accept debit cards which makes it much more convenient to "indulge" though I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not! Parking can be a challenge however if you don't mind walking a bit there are plenty of public parking lots in and around the immediate area. And, depending on what time you go, there could be a really long line but I'd say that if you're not in a hurry it may well be worth the wait!

Came to Highland Park to look at houses. The family was hungry so we stopped in here. Food is very good service is interesting. You order cafeteria style and wait in line for your food to be prepared to order. Goodness that is a long wait. I don't care for the concept. By the time my order was ready the fries they put up early were cold. But the burger was warm because it was the last item on the tray. I would come back because I know how the system works. If you want burger and fries go to the far line. If you want a salad go to the first line. Very simple once you learn the concept.

Hands down still one of the most consistent family-friendly restaurants on the North Shore. The best thing about Michael's is walking in, knowing what to expect, and leaving knowing that when you come back again it will all be the same great customer service and quality of food...each and every time. This place makes me smile. We are the weird picky eater family, and if any restaurant can please all our different tastes, allergies, and dietary restrictions, then you can guarantee we'll keep coming back. Burgers are consistent. Chicken fingers are honestly really tasty. The kids meal portion sizes are a great value. The sweet potato fries are cooked the same every time - not too soft or too crispy. The Merkt's cheese sauce is so good I could just scoop the whole container in my mouth - who needs fries? ;-) Not into the grill? No worries. Their salads totally and completely rock. The salad bar has so many toppings to choose from and they'll chop it up for you right on the spot. The baked potatoes also look so amazing. Great vegetarian option. Yep, you can expect to see our family here time and time again. Tip: Sunday nights are a quieter time to stop in. Saturday nights get pretty crazy.

Great Food ! I ordered a Buffalo Burger and was very satisfied. There was a line but its always mainly because people have complicated orders. Friendly and fast working people.

If I could burrow a hole big enough for a house into Michael's cheese sauce, I would. I am forever spoiled for future cheese sauces because of Michael's. I won't be able to eat a gross nacho or cheese fry ever again. Ah, first world problems. Beyond the awesome cheese sauce - that is far beyond the liquid orange cheese you'll find at the movie theaters - Michael's offers up an array of eats that please the masses. And I really like how the ordering process is organized, albeit a bit slow. Our lunch party veered towards the sandwiches and salads, with a side of AED, I mean, cheese fries. Good thing you can order the fried goods from the sandwich/wrap/salad side too. Life should be about variety, no? My Asian chicken wrap was not only substantial, but it was packed full of flavor! I was quite smitten with the super diced veggies and chicken in my whole wheat wrap. If I wasn't in between meetings, I could have absolutely saved half for a future lunch, too. Cheese fries + Asian chicken wrap + beautiful day eating alfresco = one happy day at Michael's. Next time I'm in HP, I'll definitely stop back in.

You know, I just had a crummy hotdog there. And crummy fries too. Looks like the place is resting on its reputation and laurels, which were never really all that good to begin with. I had to return my hotdog because the bun was so stale that it was falling apart. The fries were really uninspired and undercooked. This place used to have really good fries. The whole vibe is really lazy, I suppose they just assume they are a local grand tradition and everyone will love them no matter what. But for someone who knows how good Stash's used to be, and what Nathan's was for a while...the experience was sadly underwhelming.

The one reason I avoid Michael's is what a production it is getting through the line and finally eating. For the price of sitting down and being served at a comparable restaurant, you will spend a good 15-20 minutes ordering food and waiting for it to be ready to take to your table. I find a lot of time is spent going back and forth to the counter piecing together everyone's orders. The food is very good, and the salad bar is the best I've found almost anywhere I've been. I'm not a huge fan of their fries, but the cheddar makes them a lot better!

Sorry I got food poisoning twice here after eating their undercooked burgers. Though it was quite a while back. I think they're good when it's cooked enough though and hot dogs were always good. For some reason I still went back that's why 2 stars instead of 1.

I have been coming to Michael's since childhood. My now 37 year old brother even had his Bar Mitzvah catered by Michael's at Courts on 41. Hot dogs galore for a bunch of 13 year olds. Michael is beyond the stereotypical hot dog stand. They have an extensive salad bar, excellent steak sandwiches and loaded baked potatoes. Its great for kids and even has a fairly big party area in the back for special occasions. For those with a craving for desert, they have a dippin' dots stand within the restaurant. Michael's also has about a dozen flat screen TV's. It's a great place to be able to watch a game without the bar atmosphere. UPDATE- The Dippin' Dots have been replaced by a probiotic ice cream stand.

Michael's is about tradition and preservation. I've been going here since I was a kid, and even though I now live in Wisconsin I still come back on occasion because it's one of those joints you can't do without for too long. Their structure, menu, and style have remained the same way since they started, and when a restaurant has a structure that works, that's a formula for success. The biggest draw is the authentic Chicago grill food. The Char Dog and its good friend the Double Char Dog cannot be missed. Succulent flavor, from that freshly grilled taste, the gigantic assortment of toppings that provide a buffet on a dog, the poppyseed bun, and the attention to detail with cuts in the meat and twisted burnt ends. It's the classic Chicago treat and if you don't want "the works" they can tailor it to your liking but I encourage you to take the plunge on this real life fantasy. Don't forget to leave room for their Cheddar Fries and Pizza Puffs. The cheese on the fries will give you a heart stoppage like the rest of the food, but it is gooey goodness and the sweat-in-the-bag fries will have you searching the bottom for those last few bites. The Pizza Puff is, yes just a deep fried pouch, but it is easily my favorite menu item and something both my brother and I make sure we get everytime. This isn't a Walmart puff, it's an Illinois specialty. The prices, service, and environment leave a lot to be desired, but the people who work there do work very hard and I respect that. It's a lot of the same staff that have been there since I was young, and they are always mobbed with customers. I'm guessing that takes its toll as the conversations are usually somewhat gruff and short, but it also could be the fact that the majority of their clientele are the super rich affluent members of the Northern Chicago suburbs. I tend to hear a lot of special requests and complaining, and nobody enjoys dealing with that in the service industry on a regular basis. Still, I wish they were a little friendlier at times and the restaurant itself is very plain with nothing in the way of entertainment outside of a few tvs. The prices are probably in line with most similar Chicago venues, but a meal can get expensive quickly as everything is a la carte. As usual, it's tough to get everything right, and while service and prices might not be the best, the food has remained consistently good since they opened. This is the perfect place to get an order for carry out, and then indulge in the guilty pleasures in the comfort of your home or hotel room.

I'm with Kathryn T. on this one. Michaels brings to mind very strong recollections of my childhood. Incredible dogs, and options with which you can enjoy them. I have many fond memories of coming here with my grandmother when I'd come to visit her in the North Shore. It was always a treat to eat here. The lines can get bad, but it's still entirely worthwhile to make the trek. Try to work on your timing if you can.

My brother and I were thinking about what to eat. We ruled out a few cuisines and he asked if I would like a Chicago Red Hot. I love those, so I thought that this was a good suggestion. So off to Michael's we went. But when we got on line and I saw the menu, I changed my mind. Those burgers they were grilling looked fantastic. I asked my brother what he was having. He had already decided on a double char burger. So I decided on that too, except I added cheddar cheese to mine and asked to have mine medium rare. Now ordering a burger medium rare is almost an impossibility. I am not sure why the grill guys always seem to sway toward well done, but they seem to do that. Maybe it's a health thing and they don't want to take any chances. But I was really pleased when I bit into my perfectly cooked medium rare double char burger. It was smoky and flamed on the outside and pink and still tasty and juicy on the inside. These guys got it perfect. Lettuce, tomatoes and raw onions were ordered. Check. They too were fresh and tasty. Now the burger was huge. I don't know what size patties Michael's uses, but after eating the double, I would guess they are at minimum a third of a pound and maybe even half a pound each. This was a monster burger. Burgers never seem big enough to me, but this double was a challenge. We also ordered an order of Onion rings and an order of grivinas to split. They too were perfect. I don't know if they use chicken fat to make their grivenas, but whatever they do use is probably related to some addictive drug, because it was hard to stop eating them. The venue is simple and set up for kids, families and the high school crowd. The place is attached to a large parking lot, so parking is easy and convenient. This place is in Highland Park, so I was not surprised to see a Ferrari parked in that lot. Prices are on the high side, but the value is definitely there, so one can ignore the high prices. I like this place.

The Chicago dog is pretty good, heaping with toppings and decent sized dog. I'm sorry to disagree with most, though, about the cheese fries. The fries themselves are just fine. But the cheese is that melted curd cheese. Think: Keebler cheese and cracker packages. That's kinda what the cheese tastes like, and I prefer that smooth liquid-like nacho cheese for my fries. Extra bonus: green river soda!!!

Michael's is BUSY and for good reasons! This place makes a mean hot dog. DH and I love our dogs. And there is nothing more disappointing than a sad dog. But Michael's delivers. You wait in line to order, get and pay for your food. Then you can 1. Eat outside on the patio tables 2. Eat inside in the small seating area 3. Take your food home. We happened to come at the height of dinner. So waiting in line was a bit long. It seems very chaotic behind the counter but we did manage to get everything we ordered. There's a separate line for people wanting salad. Really? Salad at a hotdog joint? But there was a long line. So either the salads are that good or there are a lot of rabbits in HP. The dogs were fab! Fresh onion to top it all off :) Even my boys devoured their meal. They are extremely generous with the French fries so feel free to share amongst yourselves.

My husband and I grew up going here, so we decided to go back to relive our memories. We have a go-to hotdog place elsewhere on the north shore, so were looking to see if we should make the switch. And...that will not be happening. We went at like 2:30pm on a weekday. Two people in front of us. We must have waited at LEAST 20 minutes in line. The weird thing -- there were like 7 people working behind the counter. We just stood and stood and stood. Finally our order was taken. Three hot dogs, cheddar fries, drinks. Another ten minutes just standing there. Irving's in Wilmette would have had that order up and served in 2 minutes flat. It was like watching the DMV workers prepare your hot dog. Actually it made the DMV seem fast. Onto the hot dogs. All of our hot dogs were lukewarm. Not even hot. They didn't seem like Vienna Beef to me. The pickles were cut so large it was impossible to eat on the dog. The tomatoes were also cut way too big. But the room temperature quality was the main problem. Cheddar sauce on fries is GREAT. But fries themselves were under seasoned and tasted warmed over. Head on over to Irving's and forget this place.

One of my favorite places to eat! The staff is friendly and the line moves fast. The food is amazing and my must have when in town. If you're looking for a good burger, hot dog, fries, or even a salad, this is the place to go!

Does Michael's even NEED a review? No. but I do love a hotdog, so here we are. Michael's is the quintessential HP eatery-- TONS of teenagers, and lots of families where everyone is getting hotdogs but the mom, who is eating a salad, and service is very friendly but clearly no one is in a rush (read: takes FOREVER.) The hotdogs are good, and the burgers are REALLY good. Merkts cheese, which is always a plus. DELIGHTFUL '90s decor in the giant room in the back-- it feels like the Max, or a really awesome teal-and-purple 90s bar mitzvah party. I mean, I love this place. So weird. It has everything you could want if you like greasy food from a grill, salad, baked potatoes, or frozen yogurt.

I'm not a Highland Park native (though, I've lived here since 2000) and can understand the mixed reviews. If you grew up in HP, you love Michael's. The owner probably recognizes you and you're not put off by the gruff counter staff and "food court" ambience. If you're a visitor, you can't believe people would pay $10 for a Michael's burger. The food is not exceptional, the service is lukewarm (at best) and it's all overpriced. It's a matter of expectations and, if you're not a native, you won't get the appeal. This is a North Shore burger joint for North Shore types. In that regard, they truly excel. But it has limited appeal.

In the northern 'burbs, it seems that every town has their own family owned hotdog place. So, while I was killing time in Highland Park, and decided to pop into Michael's for a quick dinner. Michael's is your typical local hotdog shop. They have a fairly large menu, covering hotdogs, burgers, beefs, salads, and shakes. The decor of the dining room is a mix of "Miami" and "Spaceship;" not unpleasant, but certainly interesting. The plenty of things to entertain children while parents chitchat (including TVs and a small arcade). The service is fairly disengaged from the clientele, which people running back and forth from the cooking area to the backroom, while orders are waiting. Also, the service is slow, especially by the standards of restaurants like this. That being said, I was a little disappointed by my trip here. I wanted to like it, I really did, but the service and actual food just didn't do it for me. After taking a peek at their salad station (which looked a bit past fresh), I decided to try their bison burger, which turned out to be pretty good. Sadly, when I asked for cheddar cheese on the burger, I did not expect them to use the cheddar sauce. It was a bummer, but workable. I also ordered some mozzarella sticks, which had zero taste. Pair it with their institutional marinara, and it wasn't worth half of the $4 they charged. In fact, my entire dinner cost me nearly $15 (with no drink). It's heartbreaking to be charged such a premium price for such an inferior product. If I'm in the neighborhood, I might give them a one more chance, but I won't be going out of my way to visit Michaels, when there are so many other places within driving distance that do this better.

Sometimes it's difficult to find a restaurant to satisfy everyone (including a picky 2 1/2 year old), but there's something for everyone at Michaels. Whether you want to indulge in a burger and fries or opt for a healthy salad Michael's has you covered. I find their vast menu to almost be overwhelming, but after frequent visits (mostly for carryout) I've learned you can't really go wrong w/ anything at Michaels. I typically stick with their salads (topped with a scoop of delish tuna) while helping myself to bites of a cheeseburger and fries of my little one. And even my picky little one can't resist anything I've given her from Michaels. Food from here is sure to put a smile on anyone's face.

RIPOFF!!! You will wait in line for an abnormal amount of time whether it's busy or dead. You will get talked about in Spanish by some clearly unhappy employees. You will feel like they charged you extra for things most places just give away like pickles or tomatoes. You will feel like you paid 30% more than any other hot dog place ever!!! Where do you people think you are? Manhattan?!?!?? Food is mediocre at best and 4 bucks for an order of fries? What are you growing the potatoes out back? Simply ridiculous.

Not only does Michael's have, in my opinion, the best hot dogs and hamburgers anywhere, but the business is phenomenally well run, well-priced, and friendly. Seriously. Many of employees have been there for years and they are motivated, patient, and customer-focused. True, they don't chit-chat much with customers, but you're there to get a great meal exactly as you want it, not to exchange jokes with the busy staff. One particularly smart thing they do is assign a single worker to see the customer through from start to finish. There are many places where a large, customized family order could go wrong and I think this model works well here. Weaknesses? Well, I see that some disagree with me here, but I would say the fries are only so-so.

  • Tim S.

I've only been in the north shore a few years. Yes it's a bit pricy, dingy, and the service is just ok. I like the cheddar sauce for the burgers, the food is consistent, and I like the nostalgia with the place. Honestly people stop bitching about the price. If 11 is too steep for a meal truck on over a few blocks to McDonalds. What's that going to run you 7 maybe 8 unless you solely rely on the dollar menu for your meal?

  • Shira G.

This place just went down further in my book. Has anybody else notice if you use the wedeals that were offered... They give you less of your food? They use to fill up the salad container. As soon as I use the Wedeal mine was not even half full! my salad was sitting side-by-side with somebody else's and it was a joke. I asked that they add some lettuce at least to top it off.... Also got one of those ice cream things that they offer, using wedeal card. I asked why it was two thirds empty? The guy said sometimes it looks smaller because of the weather so the machine is slow or serves softer icecream. Seriously??? Must really think that clientele are idiots..... So this use to be a place I want to occasionally. After I use the rest of the Wedeals I'm saddled with... It will not be a place I come to anymore.

Haven't eaten here in 20 years and am visiting friends in Highland park so was super stoked to eat here again. Wow am I disappointed!! Food cold and buns soggy I guess I can cross this one off!!! Update just I opened my burger and it was practically raw

What can I say. $11.85 for a cheeseburger, fries and a small soda. Absurd! This is a hot dog stand. I had business in Highland Park and decided to grab something easy and cheap. I was stupid. Should have left. Forgot that everything in HP is expensive. I will never visit this place again. Food was average.

Now that I've pretty much worked my way through the whole menu at Michael's, I really feel like I need to update my review. The only thing I haven't had yet is the salad bar. I always find myself saying "what if I want more than 4 toppings?" Does anyone know how that works? At any rate, I've never eaten anything at Michael's I haven't gobbled up in almost disgusting gluttony. It all rocks. My favorites include: /cheeseburgers (slathered with melted Merkt's type cheese? Hell yes. /char dogs (with all the chicago-style fixins. Love that I can get grilled onions too.) /tamales (typical corn-roll style, but love them just the same.) /Popeye potato (spinach souffle stuffed inside a potato and topped with melted cheddar. Try adding sour cream and bacon.) Mike's Bites with parm and cheddar. Bottom line, this is not diet food. In The Raw is up the street if you're looking for something more health conscious. If you want comfort food... Michael's is your place. Everything is made TO ORDER. There are no pre-cooked burgers here. You order it, they slap it on the grill. It does not get better. I only wish they had gyros.

I came in with my husband and two hungry teenagers while visiting Chicago. I hadn't been here in YEARS. Probably 10? These guys haven't changed and that makes me so happy. They are doing it all right! I love that they have a giant salad bar that you can order from and that you can get your salad chopped! The fact that there are also baked potatoes? This is clearly my happy place. The hot dogs are delicious, the french fries are a must. And if your'e drinking a soda do yourself a favor and get a red cream soda. End of story. While it's quite the trek from the city it's well worth the milage when visiting from out of town!

Idk if this one is any relation to the one in Buffalo Grove or not, but I may have to go back to this location in the future based on some recent poor reviews on the other one. Was always a good place to stop at before or after seeing the movie at the Highland Park Theater.

This place is so good and welk worth the drive. A giant salad menu to choose from and hot dogs for the kids. What could be better? Bring the family and friends you won't regret it!

  • Diana P.

If you're from HP or know someone who is, you grew up with "Michaels" and their famous "cheese fries". Now the menu offers more healthier options for those who don't want to indulge themselves in delicious greasy food. Salad bar is wonderful with so many fresh options and great toppings/dressing. While your friends eat their burger, you on your diet can enjoy, just as much, a salad or baked potato. Honestly, out of all the fast food type of joints around the area, this one beats them all. Also, don't be fooled, the location in BG is NOT owned by the same people here so the food is a bit different. Hotdogs are for sure. Back in the day I had my Sweet Sixteen party here and it was a huge hit for all. I wish they would update their 80's theme, however, that's probably what keeps people coming back. Reminds them of their youth (as with me).

  • Elaine M.

When we were first moving to Highland Park from Michigan our real estate agent told us to take the kids to Michael's because it is a Highland Park institution. She was right. If I had to pick one restaurant to represent Highland Park it would be Michael's. I love their buffalo burgers. Grilled and loaded with your choice of cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickles, tomatoes, and grilled onions. The servings of french fries are huge. I would like them to start serving sweet potato fries though. The Chinese chicken wrap is good. I also love the Debbie's favorite salad but don't them chop this one, it gets too mushy. The line can can be slow and long at peak hours. You can phone in your order though. So if you have the forethought to do so I would recommend it. If you are looking for dinner, they close early so not a late night place.

Michael's is fueled by 98% nostalgia and 2% cheese fries. This is obviously a Highland Park institution that people regard highly since it reminds them of the simpler days of their youth. It's a Chicago style hot dog joint that's "classed up" with a touch of Highland Park by the North Shore salad bar and frozen yogurt stand. The food is nothing spectacular. Not bad. Meh. No frills, until you go to sit down! The dining room is something to behold. It's teal, purple, glass block, and dance floor. It's retro without trying to be retro. I think they just haven't updated the decor and now it's almost back in style. When I saw the 1980s arcade games (!), stage set up and lights, I was transported to a bar mitzvah, circa 1985. Since then, I have found out that they do indeed host bar/bat mitzvahs at Michael's! There are giant photos of the regulars all over the dining room. Some of these photos are of patrons holding photos of themselves from the last time they took patron photos. Very MC Escher, time-traveller freak out. When leaving, I thought I recognized someone but she was just one of the people from the patron photos! Unless you grew up on this stuff as a Highland Park native, I suggest parking in this lot and going to the VIP back door entrance to Once Upon A Bagel.

A good quick service place. I come here when I need to pick up some decent food fast. I think that they have good classic American food. You can either eat in or take out here. Prices are also reasonable which always is a plus.

Maybe I am biased because I grew up appreciating places like Gene and Jude's and Johnnie's Beef . As a result, I suppose my hot dog and beef bar is set very high. Needless to say, this place failed to meet my expectations so badly that I do not even feel like explaining why. But here I go...... Pros: Nice workers. Nice beer menu. Nice large atmosphere. Nice looking salads....... Cons: What the heck was the thick, oily dried out goop on my fries? It was like no other cheese that I have ever seen or tasted. Dry beef....strange looking color. Hard bread. Pre made Burgers that appeared to come from a box. Nuff said. Highland park, you just got punked because your iconic Hot dog place is a serious disappointment.

Oh Michael's, Michael's how I want to love you but how I still don't hate you, I'm kinda very neutral about you. The staff is very nice. The lines are extremely long, especially during lunch hour. There are three lines, one for the good stuff aka the burgers, dogs and fries, the other for the salad bar (which you could usually find me) and a third line on the side for the frozen yogurt, which is kinda eh in my opinion. The salad variety is nice and I usually get the medium greens with grilled chicken and the toppings are endless, any kind of veggie you could think of and I always get my favorite poppy seed dressing, mixed and chopped and overall it's a good salad. I also like Debbie's salad which is greens, walnuts, craisins, apples, goat cheese with balsamic vinagrette and it's not bad. Nothing is bad here, but nothing makes me want to crave the stuff again. I kinda just go for the convenience factor during lunch since I work in downtown HP. If you're a guy, go for the good stuff, if you're a lady, also go for the good stuff, unless you're in the mood for the "healthy stuff." But I probably wouldn't go for the yogurt since HP has many, much better options for your sweet tooth. But once again, the staff will be all nice and smile for you so that's always a positive.

Hotdogs? I've no idea how they are, but the SALADS are awesome. I ordered small greens with four toppings. Chose hardboiled eggs, cheddar, peas and croutons tossed with ranch dressing. The prep guy asked "Want that chopped?" Why, yes I do want that chopped. AND that's what makes the salad awesome! Every bite has a little bit of what you ordered. Pulling my tray from the counter, I tipped an entire iced tea onto the floor. No problem. A fresh one was made and no one seemed annoyed, except me at my clumsiness. I deducted a star for cleanliness. We were there on a Friday night before a movie at The Renaissance. It was tough to find a clean table, even though there were many tables available. I cleaned my own while a guy, who was likely supposed to be cleaning tables, stood by the garbage can helping people throw out their garbage. I will go back, though.

I was out in the burbs this past weekend checking out MJ's 23 gated crib as well as the famous Ferris Bueller's glass house-so cool right? I had my younger sister and her friend with me so whatever floats their boat I was going to go along with. Anyway came upon Michael's for a quick bite. I was surprised with how many options they had as well as how many healthy options they had. They had good quality food for affordable prices. Nice people working behind the counter. I think I liked this place so much because it reminded me of my childhood when my parents would take me and my siblings to an outdoor hot dog joint in the summers for a fun night out. I had the taco salad and my boyfriend had the chicken ceasar wrap. The two teenagers had make their own salads. All really good. I also had a shake and fries which were above average.

The best. As a HP native, I basically grew up on this place. Nowhere in Chicago chops a better salad with better ingredients, or makes a better hot dog and fries. I sometimes have a love/hate relationship with the fact that all of the North Shore shares their love of this place (it's kind of a place to "see and be seen" around town) but it's worth it for how great the food is! Two thumbs up :)

First time visitor impressions: Do not even try to go at lunch, packed and huge line. Fast, fun, convenient, family friendly, and affordable food. Definitely appears to be a local fave. I got the southwest wrap - eh, nothing to write home about there Wife got a chili dog Kids got burgers and corndog Kudos to Michaels for offering some healthy choices such as the buffalo burger ($$) and the nice looking salad bar as well. Next time I would definitely go with the salad bar. Another kudos because they were doing a dance party this particular evening that was actually open to the public so you could see what it was like and hopefully book in the future. I thought that was cool.

Not my first, but definitely my LAST trip to Michael's I ordered 2 hot dogs with an order of fries. Not too complicated, right? Well, they gave me 2 Jumbo dogs, which I never ordered because I don't like Jumbo dogs. When I saw the bill for $15.00 for 2 Jumbo dogs, and told them that was not what I ordered, they just shrugged their shoulders. Would not recommend this place to anyone!

Through Events by Michaels you can cater the entire Michael's salad bar to your home or party venue... comes with just about every fresh ingredient you can imagine! Don't be fooled by this local gem's namesake as a hot dog joint... yes, the hot dogs are damn good, but their offerings, especially with regard to catering, can span from casual cookouts, business lunches, to upscale parties. Definitely worth checking out!

I wanted to thank Mr. Unger for reaching out to my family after an order mix up. To say I was upset is an understatement. I had guests over and we didn't get the food we had ordered and the matter wasn't resolved to my satisfaction. I had to scramble to get the order right for my guests. Yesterday I received a letter of apology from Mr. Unger along with $20 worth of gift certificates for the mix up. I accused the manager of running a sub par restaurant and apologize for this hasty judgement. My family loves the food at Michael's... salads, cheese fries, wraps, burgers etc. and generous portions. They truly aim to please even when things occasionally go wrong. Pat D. Highland Park

Lovin it! I crave the cheddar char burgers and since I hadn't had one in quite some time, I had to spoil myself tonight. There is something about that burger and cheese mix that is addicting. The service is always good and most of the time, no matter what time of day, the place has a line. The menu is a lot bigger than I remember from my high school days...

Okay, so they still have the same decor they did when we moved here in the early 1990s -- a little grimy w/ random pics of people enjoying burgers and fries on the walls -- so it's not exactly winning ambiance, but it has such an effing awesome salad bar. It's truly the type of place where you can take anyone for an easy, very casual meal -- mom can get her healthy on w/ a monstrous salad or a pita pocket, the kiddies can nosh on burgers and friends, and dad can get a cheddar/bacon baked potato. It's all surprisingly good -- and some of the best HP JAP watching EVER.

It seems strange to give a restaurant five stars then immediately give very specific advice on what to eat and order. But Michael's is so overwhelmingly great, the only thing I can do is give some patronly advice on how to make the experience the best it can possibly be. Get a burger. And not just any burger. Get the bison burger. And get some cheddar cheese on that beastly patty. Go ahead, bison's healthier for you anyway. Slap on some grilled onions, too, to get your veggies. Get some cheese fries. You'll want more of that cheddar cheese. I promise. If you're a vegetarian, skip the grill. The veggie burger is fairly mushy and kind of tasteless. Head to the salad line, where they'll chop up your salad so freshly and deliciously. I guess in comparison to salad bars in cities that are made to do this, Michael's isn't extraordinary, but on the customizable greenery front, it's the best salad in Highland Park by far, in my opinion. A free roll comes with it, but if you want something more carby, get the Michael's veggie wrap (four veggies of your choice with cucumber dressing and mozzarella cheese in a tortilla... Good stuff!) In fact, if you're not a vegetarian, bring one with you. The salad line is (usually) shorter, and you can order grill items from the salad line. The prices are a little high, and it's obnoxious that they close at 8, but as someone who moved to Highland Park as a kid... and someone who's eager to move away, this is one place that I have really great memories of, dating back to when I thought it was a long walk from Elm Place (...yes, Middle School.)

Best dogs on the upper northshore. Its an institution. Great place for families. For a Chicago-style carryouts joint they've got a lot of tasty options including (gasp!) healthy salads. If you're in the area, Michael's is great spot for lunch.

LOVE THIS PLACE. I have been going for about 20 years and drive from the city to get it. WONDERFUL cheese fries. Great salad bar for parents who want to be healthy. HIGHLY RECCO IT.

This is a very cool place in the north shore. I took a nice long motorcycle ride up here with some friends for lunch on a weekend. Very fun ride!! I wasnt really feeling a hotdog or burger... so I went with a tamale. It was pretty good, but I saw them take it out of a plastic wrapping...sigh...at least it was cheap. My friends got hot dogs and burgers, all of which looked fantastic. I will definitely be riding up here on a weekend in the future to get a good Chicago style dog!!

Hmmm heard so many great things but all and all the char burgers were just "meh". Waited in line forever with way too many uncontrolled screaming north shore brats. The burgers were a bit undercooked and tasted ok but nothing to rush back to. 5 guys is better. The dining area is full of outdated pictures of kids and more precocious kids its sickening. It's like dining in a playground. Get it to go! I'll try it again, but perhaps the hot dogs this time or salads just to be fair.

Went for my first and last time this past week...needless to say the food was horrible and service was worse. My gf and I were on our way to the Sox game so we ordered food which should take little time to prepare. We waited patiently in a line of 3 people in front of us for more than 5 minutes before they took our order. Yes this is considered slow for a "fast food" business and there was no excuse considering there were no less than 8 employees behind the counter working or should I say yapping! I ordered a combo w/ sweet peppers and my gf a hot dog and fries. Once we ordered it took another 10 minutes during which time all of the previous customers were served their food and left. I asked if they had forgotten our order because not one employee came over to let us know how soon our order would be ready nor bothered to ask for payment. They were too busy conversing with each other about nothing business related. I actually got someone to take our money after which our order was givent o my gf in a bag. I asked her to check it and she didn't realize that they had put hot Giardiniera on my combo. By the time I realized their error I was on the Edens Expressway on our way to the Sox game now running late. It was not so much the fact they made a mistake as I felt they may have intentionally sabotaged our order because I was obviously not happy with their crappy service. When I finally tossed as much of the hot Giardiniera onto the Edens as possible I bit into my combo which had rubbery undercooked tasteless beef on top of a dried out over cooked sausage with the hot flavor of Giardiniera oils all soaked into a stale piece of Italian bread. This was by far the worst combo I have ever eaten. The messed up thing about all of this is that while we were standing in line to order I noticed all of the favorable articles written by several newspaper food critics many years ago while simultaneously looking at their prices thinking this place better be good considering they charge $3.49 for a hot dog! I'm sure this place was good at one point but like newspapers it should be considered a Dinosaur and be left to die. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY THIS PLACE IS BAD!!!

Michael's is fabulous. Great people, great food, great service. The food is always fresh, good quality and well prepared. The people behind the counter are hard working, accommodating, and always move the line along as quickly as is possible. They bend over backwards to make sure you get what you want, how you want it. I almost always order the grilled chicken breast, no bread, on a bed of lettuce and tomatoes, and it is GOOD, REAL FOOD. I've also had their wonderful salads, both the named ones on the menu, and the ones they will make up for you, and again, always fresh, high quality and delicious. I am not a burger person, but anyone I have ever taken to Michael's raves about their burgers, and my husband loves them. The cheddar fries are the best I've ever eaten, but the sweet potato fries are delicious, too. It is not cheap, but it is not expensive. You get what you pay for, and Michael's is a great deal. As they say, not fast food....good food fast.

How do you not like this place? Food is always consistent, has been as long as I have been going... 25+ years I think! Love the salad bar, great burgers, skirt steak sandwich is good too. Kids meals are great. And, even after all this time they are still adding new stuff from time to time. Workers are awesome! They will carry your tray out to you when you have the kids running around. Only reason they get 4 stars not 5 is the wait. Sometimes it just takes forever. And, on a busy Saturday that parking lot is ridiculous.... but they do have Charlie Chaplin making balloons animals for the kiddies. Oh ya, almost forgot.... free delivery now too!! Great place!!

Walking into Michael's is like walking into 1993. The radio plays such hits as Ottawan's "Hand's Up", R. Kelly's "I believe I can Fly", and Lionel Richie's "All Night Long". The walls are covered with photos of customers who obviously loved their Aqua Net back in the day. The decor is geometric in red, teal and purple. The whole thing just makes you want to put on your old parachute pants and Hammer dance on a table top. I love it. And yes, they also serve food. You'll have your choice of three lines for food. The line to the left is for hangover food (burgers, fries, hot dogs, pizza, etc.), the line to the right is for their most exquisite salad bar, and the line around the corner is for frozen yogurt. The options will please any person, no matter what type of food they're in the mood for. I love the salad bar because there are TONS of options... 3 different types of lettuce, 50-some topping choices, and lots of salad dressing options (half of them low-calorie/fat). They even list the calorie and fat count of the dressings on the wall so you can make healthy choices if you want to. The large salad with a meat topping will run you about $11. Slightly pricey, but when you see all the fresh ingredient choices, it makes sense. If you're in the mood for calories, skip the salad bar. They serve char-dogs! I strongly believe the ONLY way a hot dog can truly be called a "Chicago Style Dog" is if it is blackened on the outside. Yum. Enjoy!

No photos from my favorite place growing up? What? Best cheddar fries hands down. In addition, in the 80s, they started the baked potato fad where you add whatever you want. Teriyaki chicken was my favorite. Cheddar burgers, and char dogs rock. Can't wait to go back (someday)!

Dear Hungry Could-Be Patron: I'm comfortable enough with you to admit that I've been around the block a few times. I've eaten cheese fries on both coasts and everywhere in between. Listen carefully when I tell you that Michael's are the best. Whether you get the (very well) chopped salad, a hot-dog, or my favorite, the Popeye Potato, get a side of cheese fries. I know what I am talking about. Your Friend, One More Order of Cheese Fries and I Could be Labelled a Slut

I have been going to Michaels since I was a kid. It has always been a decent place for a hot dog and cheese fries, and was early to adopt to having healthy options (remember when we thought that baked potatoes were super healthy?). Tonight, I brought my family for an early dinner at 5:15. We ordered, brought our food back to the table, and noticed that the back room was set up for a Bar Mitzvah. As soon as we began eating, the owner walked in to help set up for the event. She was obviously stressed, ordering her staff around, and began cleaning up and moving tables while a few remaining tables tried to eat. She never acknowledged us, turned off the TVs as we were trying to watch a basketball game...in general, she and her staff ran around like a bunch of lunatics and made us feel uncomfortable. The kids' cheeseburgers were served without cheese, and they looked and tasted like $5 hockey pucks. Bottom line...terrible experience, and the food is average at best. If you're going back looking for nostalgia, forget it.

Stepping into Michael's in Highland Park is like visiting The Max on the set of Saved By The Bell. Which if you used to rush home from class like I did for a late afternoon marathon of the show, this is an awesome draw! Before you head back to the large dining room area decked out with silver, flashback photos, and primary colored art accents, you walk in to your choice of two lines. One with juicy burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, onion rings and some amazingly delicious salty fries and more. The other line, which I frequent with anticipation each time I visit, the salad bar! Pay a set price for the size of "greens" you'd like and get unlimited toppings, all the standards and way way more. Completely fresh. Add meat if you'd like. Their grilled tuna steak is amazing, with a slight lemon zest to it. I loved getting my salads chopped too. *drool* They also have delicious pockets that can be filled with chicken salad and tuna salad (regular or low-fat) top them with a bit of cheese and lettuce and they warm them. So good! I have friends that drool over their baked potatoes too. I highly recommend Michael's. Their staff is always friendly, even when they get their big lunch rushes which can produce some long lines. I suggest going at a slightly off hour to avoid this if possible. Otherwise the food is worth the wait! Oh and Yogen fruz too!

The burger I got was juicy an delicious. I always have a soft spot for places that are slightly run down. The decor was set in the 90s, even the music that was being played are familiar 90s music. A lot of fun photos of guests or family of the owners on their old school garb, reminding me of why fashion had changed. But the biggest thing that got my heart were the milkshakes. You can definitely taste the Dean's vanilla ice cream used within the shakes. Which, for me, brought back even more fond memories of growing up in the 90s and having Dean's ice cream for dessert (not saying I don't still do that...) . I went with a friend and the hot dog he got was also very juicy, perfect temperature. This place definitely had super tasty food. Only thing that bothered me was the service. Some of the cooks were short with me and the woman who rang me up was kind of rude. Overall: food was delicious and service was so so, however, I wouldn't need to deal with the service for too long. The milkshakes are the best!

i had the pleasure of throwing a party at michaels last summer and the air went out. nothing they could do i was told, it needed an electrician, but an hour later it was back on when they reset the circuit. the party was good, but when the bill came i was forced to give an "optional tip of $1200" - yes, forced. its optional but you have to do it, everyone worked hard on your party. there is nothing in the contract about tips, and i had a ton of cash on me to tip everyone which included the party coordinator, the bus boy (not boys), the 2 cooks, and the bartender. at michaels, there is no waiter service, so there were no wait staff - we as the party throwers had to stand in line for 30 mins like everyone else and wait on ourselves. no one waited on us. if you are thinking of throwing a party here please beware of this last minute optional tip they throw at you after you have been drinking all night and are meant to feel you have no option when everyone is standing there waiting and its on the visa charge already run awaiting your signature. i spoke with other parents who threw a similar party, and they too were "skunked" by this. i also saw the bartender a few weeks after the party and he said he never receives any gratutities from michaels at all when he works a party- ever. so who got the $1200??? i hope the new owners of michaels read this and contact me as i could not get them on the phone to discuss this.

keep in mind, that if you order a hot dog with "everything", it's chicago style but they add sauerkraut. i don't know why. get the onion rings. they are deliciously crispy and taste like they're hand battered. at $3.19 they're a bit expensive, but worth it!!!!! also, i'm so glad someone decided to open up a yogen fruz inside. what a nice dessert option. get the acai-blueberry froyo, it's DELICIOUS. i'm not a big fan of their regular flavor yogurt, but i prefer mine a little tarter like berry chill or pinkberry. i would also recommend their smoothies and their mix-in yogurts (strawberry and mango!) -- they use a different yogurt that's frozen in a block, and sometimes it can taste a little freezer burny.

This was the Northshore location for traditional Chicago hot dogs and fries, but although they are still served daily, things have changed. Michael's has expanded its menu and is featuring the new ice cream sensation dispensed in colorful little spheres. As part of the community, Michael's contributes generously to local cultural and sports groups that typically fill this large restaurant. It's a great place for kids' parties and gatherings of friends. I noticed that salads of all kinds as well as assorted baked potatoes and macaroni & cheese were among the most popular items requested.

In summary, "Cafeteria food at sit down prices." They charge $4.69 for a mediocre cafeteria-esque soup! What a disappointment! We visited yesterday (10/21/2011) and I got that gut feeling not only were we getting ripped off but also the food was sub-par. As I was walking back to the table twice after ordering to remember things that we didn't get (no butter included with bread, and later we need a salad lid, soup lid, and bag), I thought to myself "This is cafeteria food at sit-down prices." Too busy for who-knows-what reason. We were shocked when we ordered for 3 people and the total was $31, but wait there's more! We ordered: -2 diet Dr. Pepper sodas (flat, not that cold, and not fizzy, and they didn't even taste that Dr. Peppery!) $1.99 + $1.99 -1 chocolate milk for son, $1.59, (not filled up all the way) -2 medium size chicken noodle soups $4.69 + $4.69 each (First off, WTH on the price! And they tasted like they were straight out of a vat of premade soup.) -2 4-topping salads ($4.99 + $4.99), they fail to tell you that there's absolutely no meat choices to choose from with the "Small Greens" option. We were hungry! We wanted chicken or something on top. It turns out "tomato" counts as 1 topping, "croutons" are 1 topping. They were so stingy I had to say can I have a "1/2 cheese and a 1/2 egg". Embarrassing RIPOFF. Then we got desperate and added chicken, another $3 please! They're very stingy on the salad dressing. -1 plain hot dog for son, $3.19 (We've tasted better buying and boiling from the store!) Our total was $34...For this money we could have been waited on at Baker's Square including a tip! Then the experience began. We sat in the back...screaming kids, too many kids with 1 parent to 4-5 kids ratio. What hell. If I wanted this atmosphere I'd eat in a daycare. Keep your screamers, climbers, don't-know-how-to-eaters at home, please! Then we went to the bathroom, I commented how dark it was in the women's. My son, 5, said "It's a cave!" Seriously with the $34 I gave you for mediocre food, turn up the darn lights! Thank you - we're never coming back - I rather check out anything else around there: Subway, Noodle place, ANYTHING. Heck I rather grab food at pricey Sunset Foods and travel back home.

Michael's is a North Shore institution, period. Try to get into the parking lot between 11:30 and 1 any day of the week and I think you'll agree; bursting with families, teenagers, area employees, it is the place to grab something quick to eat in Highland Park. First of all, get the cheddar fries. I don't care what diet you're on-- they will be one of the most sublime things you've ever consumed. Crispy, straight-outta-the-freezer fries, sure... but that cheese sauce? Tangy, gooey, and everything that makes America great. The hot dogs are delicious and wholly Chicago: Vienna Beef, steamed, Rosen's bun. However this place isn't all burgers and fries. Expand your horizons and grab a buffalo burger or one of their delicious wraps-- my favorite is the turkey BLT in a spinach tortilla. Fantastic salad bar too. For dessert? Try the banana-chocolate shake and thank me later.

Michael's has the best hotdogs on the North Shore, and the best cheese fries on the planet. Shakes are also terrific. However, if you'd like something healthy, the chicken caesar wrap fits the bill. One wrap is enough for me to share. Fortunately, the servers cut them in 2. Very kid friendly.

I know for many reviewers Michael's evokes fond childhood memories, so my apologies in advance. The First Amendment is, after all, about the free marketplace of ideas. For me, Michael's evokes awful memories and signifies some awful qualities in my fellow humans. I know I'm free to go and eat where I please, but this time I was trapped, as we were visiting dear friends whose children inhabit the North Shore, and Michael's was the chosen lunch place. There really is nothing quite like a Saturday lunch at Michael's in Highland Park to remind me how much I loathe suburbs. My distaste for suburbs as an ex-suburbanite is akin to my revulsion for cigarettes as a former smoker. I admit I hated living in Highland Park even when I was a kid and teenager, so this is nothing new. But it boils down to this: if I wanted to surround myself with the heinous homogeneity of upscale conspicuously consuming lonsman, it would be more gratifying to re-join a synagogue that costs roughly $2500 annually. From the fancy cars for whose drivers it seems the rules of the road and common decency are optional competing aggressively for coveted parking spaces, to the jewels on the pushy folks in line clamoring for grilled grease, to the apparently anorexic or bulemic teen sisters excoriating their mother loudly and shamelessly for bringing them to Michael's (and the mother taking it rather than smacking them or leaving with them), to the noise and chatter overheard once seated: OY VEY! I heard a nasal young mother snorting cluelessly about her experience at Ravinia that morning at a Kraft Kids Concert, by saying how "nice" it was that the Joffrey had included an "under privileged part" of the performance by including dancers of color. I nearly choked on and then almost spat my overcooked cheeseburger at her; a burger and greasy, overcooked fries for which I'd waited way too long. For me there is comfort in cities and their diversity. And the food, service and ambience at Michael's: eh, meh, feh!

Someone tell me why a regular char dog is $3.09? Someone tell me why a medium soda is $2.09? And my cheese fry was $1.79, which made almost 9 bucks for a fricking unhappy meal. I'm sorry but this place is way overpriced for the quality. And they don't take debit/credit. Conveniently enough, they have a cheesy ATM in the lobby that dispenses cash for a mere $2 per transaction. Hmmmm seems like Michael's is on the take. And it couldn't happen to a snobbier, ruder, more miserable suburb. I hate Highland Park. Highland Park deserves Michaels!

I was out this way today, so I thought I would give this place a try. It is a little bit of a challenge when it comes to parking. There is limited street parking. I thought the food was OK. I had the hot dog and it was nothing special or different from other hot dog stands. The big problem is that it cost more then any other place. I paid over $7 for a hot dog, fries, and small drink. It was clean and nice inside. There is plenty of room inside to sit and eat. You can also sit out front at the limited number of tables outside. I will have to give Stash's down the street a try. I will not be returning just for the fact that the cost was pretty high.

Michael's, by far, has some of the best cheese fries that I have ever had, no matter what the state. And their buffalo burgers, char dogs, and chicken sandwiches are all amazing! They have a large enough menu to please people of all different tastes, and the quality ingredients to make it all good. Now I know some of the reviews have complained about the patrons that it brings, and the spoiled and annoying kids. But just as I don't punish Six Flags for having a bunch of hicks as its customer base, I can't blame Michael's for working in that area. Every single business around there has the same problem. Michael's is overpriced, I will admit that. But not for the quality of food, their ability to personalize food to your needs, and the positive influence they have brought through their community service. BTW, they actually do take credit and debit cards - maybe that post was from a while ago. As a native Chicagoan, I have tried many a Chicago hot dog, and know that Michael's will hold its own against any other. Make sure to try the Char Dog though - it's much better on the grill! I will not defend the town and the people, but when it comes to food, Michael's is amazing at what they do. And the food is really all that matters. Seriously, try the cheese fries and tell me you don't agree.

So the dining room resembles a high school cafeteria, or maybe a Saved By the Bell set, but the food makes up for it! I come here for the salads, but have also tried the burgers, hot dogs and potatoes. ALL good. The salad bar offers almost every imaginable topping, so you can build a personalized delicious meal that is different every time. I love how they offer to chop and toss the salad, which gets the dressing evenly distributed, and makes everything from giant artichoke hearts to long strings of jicama conveniently bite sized. Parking and local clientele are a nightmare, but it's part of the experience. :)

Michael's is a North Shore institution, period. I've been coming here since I was a kid and it is as awesome now as it was back then. My favorite thing about this place is that they have sauerkraut which is, hands down, the best hotdog topping ever ... and for some reason other dog stands don't have it. If you are a city dweller I am sure that there are better dog stands out there for you, in the city. But Michael's is a piece of North Shore history, and no matter what one may say, it will always be the best dog and hold a special place in this suburbanite's heart.

NOT the best cheese fries ever. Generic yellow, thin, movie theater nacho cheese coupled with out-of-a-box frozen fries. Bleah. But the undisciplined, screaming kids in the dining room made this the worst hot dog joint in an area that excels in top notch hot dog joints. Boo.

Growing up in HP, Michael's was always a good place to grab a bite. As I got older and expanded my horizons, I began to realize that Michael's is about par for greasy spoon food. The major PLUS to Michaels is the options of Salads or meats. Michaels makes awesome salads and wraps for those not interested in high cal. and makes a good burger or dog for those who want it. If your in the area and looking for a bite, with a group that can't decide on what they want to eat, Michael's is a great place to eat. btw, they need to update the photos on the wall as some are from when I was only 5 years old- I am now 22. Add some new kids to the wall so they get their Michael's place of glory.

Wow...So, I work in Deerfield and therefore, I am fairly close to this place....So, why did I not know about it????? A co-worker convinces me to go for lunch, because of the super salads. I'm like...uh, this is a hot dog joint! Boy, was I wrong. This place makes the best salads I ever had. The medium greens with 4000 toppings, chopped up, mixed with your choice of dressing, and a bialy. OMG...awesome! I read the other reviews and hear about the sandwiches, dogs, cheese fries...all of which I enjoy. But, I was exposed to these awesome salads on my first visit...so, I dont think I will ever get to try the rest of the menu. Hey, why mess with success? That all said, you MUST go here for the world's best salad. Thank me later, ok?

This is where we stopped for lunch. Needless to say my crew couldnt wait to get away from this place, out of this god-awful town, and eat some real food. Ugh, I hate the burbs.

Here's what bothers me about his place. The guy that takes your order and prepares your food....takes the money too. No gloves in sight. I was very surprised by that. Germs! I could not focus on enjoying the food when I thought about the 100's of people and their money going through that guys hands before he handled my hot dog.... bare hands. Gross.

Food was so-so after eating at Portillos, Dear Frank's, and SuperDawg. Fries had little flavor, cheese was blah. Char Cheddar dog was too thin , tiny and over-cooked. Kudos on the Xlnt condiments, bun too soft, soggy, over steamed. Drinks - We got a 7-up & Pepsi and they were BOTH flat- and warm! UGH!!! Returned & refunded. Waited at the counter for frozen yogurt and rang the bell for service TWICE but no one ever showed up. The worst part was the dining room. Dirty, full of noisy crying kids who ran around or stood on chairs shrieking, or screaming & crying. Parents who NEVER disciplined their kids or asked them to quiet down or behave. It was a horrific experience in every way. I couldn't believe so many things could go wrong in such a short visit!!! NEVER AGAIN. I think their employees must be posting the good reviews because this place was terrible in comparison with any of the above mentioned places (Portillo's, Dear Frank's, Superdawg). I can't IMAGINE anyone being happy here. I'm sad and disappointed to give such a review.

I don't know of a better 'fast food' salad bar. The selection is huge and fresh. The price is reasonable. If I lived closer, I'd be eating there weekly.

WAY over priced! I can get better food than this in the city for less money!

Michael's can't really hold a candle against Portillo's or Superdawg, but you can tell that it doesn't need to for the loyal fans. The folks are friendly and the menu is really diverse (including gizpacho), especially considering how dive-y the place is. I also enjoyed the outdoor seating aspect, which is nothing new, but is nice considering how beautiful downtown Highland Park is.

What I would give right now for a jumbo char dog right now. I wish I never had eaten here only because I crave it now. Best hot dogs I have ever had.

Nothing special about this place, except lots of pushy people. Food is much better a Stash's.

Michael's is truly an institution - huge part of my childhood, and I was always so jealous of my friends who had their birthday or bar mitzvah parties there! Definitely one of the best hotdog places in all of Chicagoland - char dog and cheddar fries just can't be beat! If you're not in the mood to clog your arteries, I hear the salads are really tasty too! (Though personally, I would never go to Michael's and NOT order a hotdog...but that's just me...)

Really, really good hot dogs and excellent fries. For what it is, this place is excellent. Would have given five stars but definitely overpriced.

I equate Michael's with my childhood. It is a highland park staple that consistently serves good food. Michael's has my all time favorite cheese fries. They are definitely the best on the North Shore. They have an extensive menu and lettuce wraps for low-carbers. The salads are amazing and HUGE. Definitely at least 2 meals. Parking is really difficult, but all of downtown HP is the same way. The lines are long during traditional lunch and dinner hours, but it is well worth the wait. It's one of the places I make sure to go whenever I'm in town. Love it.

I've been eating Michael's since I was a little girl. They have far and away the BEST cheese fries on this planet. I've never been disappointed with my meal. I love this place.

Fun hotdog place. I grew up in Chicago with places like Wolfy's and Fluky's, and now that I'm suburban I find myself liking this place. Big menu, even have salads and wraps. Parking is really tough, and sometimes I go to Stash's just for that reason, but I prefer Michaels.

Even though I now live in the NW burbs - I still make a special trip to Michael's when I go see my Dr. located in Highland Park. Great Chicago favorites: dogs, burgers, fries. Also, fabulous fresh salads, chopped to order on the "healthy" side of the line. I had to take a star off for the obnoxious North Shore Soccer Moms with Attitude clientele. Don't miss that at all.

  • Margaret B.

Hot dogs, good. hamburgers, good. Baked potatoes with all the fixin's, good. Wraps, good. Salad bar, fantastic. They've got all sorts of fresh goodies and mix and chop your salad for you. I used to take my college friends there from time to time and they compared it to The Max from Saved by the Bell. All sorts of photos of HP folk on the walls, lots of screaming children but sometimes you just need good, casual food.

While most go with a burger or dog, I always enjoy an order of chicken fingers. Something about how they come out makes them taste better than at other places. Try em the next time you visit...

Food is really good, but I have to only give this place one star because it not only is over-priced. It is an absolute RIP-OFF. I ordered a hot dog, fries and a drink and my bill was $11- something. worse than wrigley field.

Seriously overrateed. Clearly it's an institution in Highland Park, judging from the pictures on the wall - though why that's so escapes me. Having spent the last 20 years eating Chicago style fast food, it takes a lot to stand out above the rest. Sorry to say, this one does not in most regards. The only major area of note is the price. Two dogs, one fry, a medium drink, and a carton of milk for my son. TWELVE DOLLARS. Whaaattt? Two packages of top notch hot dogs at retail don't cost that much - and that combo can be had at every stand in the city for 4-6 bucks. (Try Tommy's Red Hots (multiple locations) dog special - 2 dogs, fries and a coke - for $3 and change...) The community support I can't comment on (I'm not from Highland Park), but with that sort of margin - they certainly can afford to share the wealth. (and obviously it comes back in spades) If there was a "Relative Price Range" I'd say $$$$. Since there is not - the two star rating.

I am giving this place two stars because I used to frequent this joint before i knew what a Chicago Style Hotdog actually was. You know I actually feel that the restaruant is not a phsycial establishment as much as it is the friggin' twilight zone. Memories from this place include the folllowing: First, seeing a young jewish boy choke on half a hotdog and his mothering screaming in a Yiddish accent (with the flem in the back of the throat) "Haaaaa He's dyin!' haaaa He's dyin!'" The kid coughed up the dog and was fine. That was before about 3 ambulances and 3 fire trucks decended on the place. Overkill ya think? Another memory of this place is when this other bitch of a lady got cheddar cheese dipping sauce in her huge rock of a wedding ring, and was screaming at the mexican grill guy to which he responded verbatum. "Is ok ladeee...is just food." fucking-a i was roarin'. The last memory of this pisshole of a hotdog stand was when this kid was running to the bathroom, slipped on the floor and drenched his face in a strawberry milkshake. He mom basically led him out of the place while he was crying and used the garden hose at the side of the stand to hose him off...as they get into their Mercedes Benz all you hear is the kid scream, "BUT MOOOOM...DANNY AND JOSH GOT ANOTHER MILKSHAKE!"....What a fucking mess.

Best place to get a good dog in Highland Park. That said, the atmosphere doesn't even come close to a downtown dog place. So, a halfhearted three from me. Tasty food, but the ambience... Eh. Too sanitized and chain-like.

Best cheese fries ever! I've been coming here since I was six and it's just one of those places I have to hit every time I'm in town. Great hot dogs, burgers, chicken fingers, etc. Salad bar and baked potatoes are a good, healthy choice. Avoid the lunch hour because it gets crazy packed. Pretty expensive, but worth it. I'd say if you get a burger, fries, and a drink, you're talking 10 bucks.

  • Jay K.

  • Allison M.

Their beef with mozzarella was awesome. Better than Portillo's. Fries are very very good, too. Ample seating and free WiFi. What's not to love?

This was the Northshore location for traditional Chicago hot dogs and fries, but although they are still served daily, things have changed. Michael's has expanded its menu and is featuring the new ice cream sensation dispensed in colorful little spheres. As part of the community, Michael's contributes generously to local cultural and sports groups that typically fill this large restaurant. It's a great place for kids' parties and gatherings of friends. I noticed that salads of all kinds as well as assorted baked potatoes and macaroni & cheese were among the most popular items requested.

Boo.

Good Chicago hot dogs and fries. Walk up ordering with nice seating area. Good for what it is.

  • Erik J.

This hot dog restaurants is great. The quality of food is the best, people are friendly & I want to make special mention of their cheese fries which are the best. I will keep going back.

Food is really good, but I have to only give this place one star because it not only is over-priced. It is an absolute RIP-OFF. I ordered a hot dog, fries and a drink and my bill was $11- something. worse than wrigley field.

  • J R.

  • Eli R.
